Saint-Césaire in the Time of Alfred Bessette (1845–1870)
Talk hosted by Gilles Bachand, historian
Before becoming Brother André, founder of Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal and porter of Collège Notre-Dame, Alfred Bessette was first a child of Saint-Césaire.
In the mid-19th century, this small town was a lively place where industry, agriculture and culture intersected. What was daily life like for young Alfred? Who were the notable figures of Saint-Césaire? And how did his encounters with parish priest André Provençal and the Congregation of Holy Cross shape his vocation?
An illustrated 40-minute talk presented by a specialist historian, to rediscover the world that shaped the man who would come to be known as Brother André.
