With its colorful flowers, vast green spaces, tall trees, and magnificent Garden of the Way of the Cross, the site of Saint Joseph’s Oratory offers an unparalleled place of contemplation in the heart of the city, on the north slope of Mount Royal.
The Concourse opens onto a terrace that offers a wonderful panoramic view of the northwestern part of the island of Montréal. In the distance, one can distinguish the Laurentian mountain range. From this vantage point, one can admire the most beautiful sunsets over the city.
Since November 2022, the terrace has been home to an imposing sculpture, Angels Unawares, by Ontario artist Timothy P. Schmalz. This bronze sculpture refers to the duty of hospitality and solidarity of every human being, evoking an evangelical precept from the New Testament: “Be not forgetful to entertain strangers; for thereby some have entertained angels unawares” (Letter to the Hebrews 13:2). The artist portrays, crowded on a boat, children, women, and men from different origins and epochs, while the wings of an angel emerge from the midst of the group.
