- OpenVotive Chapel
The Votive Chapel is at the heart of the Oratory site. Designed by architect Lucien Parent, this long Art Deco-style gallery, located between the Crypt Church and the rock of Mount Royal, accommodates 10,000 lamps and votive candles. This chapel is a place of devotion and prayer to Saint Joseph.
It features bas-reliefs illustrating eight titles attributed to Saint Joseph in Christian tradition: Model of Workers, Mainstay of Families, Guardian of the Pure in Heart, Terror of Demons, Our Consolation in Suffering, Hope of the Sick, Patron Saint of the Dying, and Protector of the Church. These works were created in 1950 by sculptor Joseph Guardo.
Ex-votos (crutches and canes) are suspended between the pillars of the chapel, reminding visitors of the many graces, favors, and healings obtained through prayer to Saint Joseph. In the center stands the large statue of Saint Joseph in white marble, designed by Joseph Guardo and executed in Italy. At its feet, the ‘‘Fountain of Graces’’ creates an atmosphere conducive to contemplation.
At one end of the chapel, a statue of Saint Joseph overlooks a basin of oil where a flame is constantly burning. Saint Joseph’s oil is bottled and made available to pilgrims who use it as an act of faith. Brother André recommended that the sick rub the afflicted part of their body with this oil and pray to Saint Joseph.
