10th Anniversary of Saint Brother André’s Patronage of Caregivers in Canada

In 2010, the leadership of Saint Joseph’s Oratory welcomed my proposal to name Saint Brother André the patron of caregivers. I was truly fortunate to receive their support and progressive vision throughout this initiative, which culminated with the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops officially proclaiming Saint Brother André the Patron of Caregivers in Canada on September 30, 2016.

For the past decade, Saint Brother André has been spiritually accompanying and supporting the dedicated caregivers who turn to him under his patronage. His presence is quiet and humble. One can easily imagine Saint Brother André drawing close to the soul of the person seeking his intercession and bestowing his graces by speaking to the wisdom of an open heart, just as he did during his lifetime, when generations of caregivers came to him in faith. Often unexpected yet deeply effective, moments of comfort and relief arise where there once seemed to be no way forward. We need only remain attentive, for Saint Brother André is always ready to fulfill his mission as patron.

Every day, these compassionate individuals face demanding challenges. Whether they are navigating the complexities of an overburdened healthcare system to care for a loved one with a serious medical condition, struggling to secure respite services, sacrificing their retirement savings, or carrying countless other responsibilities, their commitment is unwavering.

If you know a caregiver in your family or community, please show them kindness. Ease their burden in whatever way you can through simple acts of generosity: prepare a meal, offer an hour of respite care, run errands, provide transportation, or lend a helping hand wherever it is needed. Such acts are true expressions of charity.

If there is one message that should mark the 10th anniversary of this patronage, it is this: let us honour the indispensable social contribution of caregivers, whose lived compassion reminds us of our shared humanity in the face of the dehumanization that too often finds its way into contemporary society.

United in prayer.
