On a Journey with Joseph
On several occasions, Saint Joseph moved from one place to another. In Luke’s Gospel, we see Joseph traveling to Bethlehem for the census of the people according to the decree of Caesar Augustus. Joseph and Mary also travel to Jerusalem for the presentation of Jesus in the Temple. The Holy Family also travels to Jerusalem to celebrate the Jewish Passover. In the Gospel according to St. Matthew, there is the flight into Egypt.
During the journeys mentioned in these two gospels, we can see the importance of Joseph’s presence with Mary and Jesus. This presence is reflected in the accompaniment he provided, which surely made Mary and Jesus feel secure. He took care of his wife and son. He participates in the Father’s plan of salvation. His discreet presence makes us aware of the presence that Christ shares with us in the Church.
Joseph traveled with Mary from Nazareth to the Galilean town of Bethlehem for the census under Quirinius, governor of Syria.
While there, Mary gave birth to her first-born son. The father’s role was essential in assisting his wife in the birth of Jesus. Joseph’s testimony presents him as an attentive husband to his wife and son.
Saint Joseph makes himself present to our life in the Church. He travels with us on our Christian journey. He intercedes with Jesus so that the graces of blessing may rest on all human beings. He continues to accompany each baptized person.
He witnessed the wonder of God in the birth of Jesus, the beloved Son of the Father.
Faced with this birth, he invites us to let Jesus be born into our lives by loving one another. Let us be close to our brothers and sisters in the faith, in the manner of Saint Joseph. Let us welcome this marvel of God who gives us life and shares his love with us.
