Habemus papam!
American Cardinal Robert Prevost, 69, was elected Pope on Thursday May 8, 2025 at 6:08 pm (Rome time). This Augustinian religious spent many years as a missionary in Peru, before being called to Rome by Francis in 2023 as prefect of the dicastery for bishops. In choosing him, the cardinals confirmed their choice of an open, multicultural and missionary Church. American by birth, Robert Prevost is the son of a father of Franco-Italian origin and a mother of Spanish descent, who spent much of her life as a missionary in Peru before becoming superior of her religious order in Rome. That, in a nutshell, is the story of the man whom the cardinals gathered in conclave to elect as the 267th Pope, a story that exemplifies the multicultural Church so dear to Pope Francis.
